Why did we put these kids in a tent in the middle of the classroom?

It all traces back to motivation models. What drives students to succeed? We’ve found that rewarding effort yields powerful results.

So when these 2nd graders hit all of their academic goals, they earn the reward of doing their schoolwork in a special tent with string lights and comfy couches.

This is just one example of rewards offered. A famously popular one is that students get to choose any prize under $1,000 when they hit a certain goal. Just like how kids can turn in tickets for a prize at Chuck E. Cheese, students can earn real rewards for hard work.

One high school student chose a $200 gift card to Brandy Melville. One middle schooler chose a new pair of Adidas Sambas. And our most popular prize? A 1:1 special lunch with their Guide. 🥹

Tapping into motivation models works. I believe it’s a tool every school can and should implement.

Failure is fuel for success. It’s a necessary step for students if you want to achieve anything really. “Fail often and fail fast” is a mantra we repeat to our students over and over. It is one of the many many life skills we teach every afternoon, since we do academics in 2 hours in the AM only.

All the good teachers are gone… or at least they

All the good teachers are gone… or at least they will be at this rate, if we don’t change something.

The job description has gotten WAY out of hand relative to the pay and support.

My proposed changes (which I implement at all of my schools):

1️⃣ Fair pay, $100k minimum 💸
Teachers are grossly underpaid. They need and deserve fair compensation for their contributions. And they definitely should not be self-funding classroom decor and supplies.

2️⃣No parent communication 🙅🏼‍♀️
We created a separate role called the Dean of Parents for all parent communication, alleviating a massive burden from our Guides.

3️⃣No lesson plans 📄
Our Guides focus only on emotional and motivational support. They’re responsible for facilitating life skills workshops during afternoons, keeping students accountable, helping students set and hit goals, and all non-academic endeavors. They provide human support for all the things humans do best, and let our AI tutor handle the personalized academic learning.

We are heading towards a serious crisis unless we reform the role of teachers. To all the teachers reading this, I see your struggle. Thank you for pouring your time, energy, and love into our future generations. ❤️

Her family moved to Texas to attend our GT school for Gifted and Talented students after realizing public school wasn’t going to be a good fit for Everest.

Since our academic curriculum is finished in just 2 hours per day (thanks to 1:1 personalized learning via A.I. tutoring), Everest has the entire afternoon free to dedicate to life skills and passions.

Her hunger for learning can finally be accommodated in a way that’s perfectly unique to her. We are so proud of her and absolutely honored to be trusted with such a brilliant young mind. 💡💛
